Sadie
by Brian .........................................
I picked Sadie out of a litter, without ever seeing her. I picked the odd ball. I wanted the only grey female, by the way she was also the bully. She never missed a meal! The day I saw her, I instantly fell in love with a fat, little, gray fur ball, with baby blue eyes. I drove home with her on my lap, and she fell right to sleep.
She was the easiest dog to train, she pooped in the house once, she was shown where to do it; and that was all it took. She grew up healthy and happy. She was one fast pup, when she would kick it into gear, she would hunker down and haul butt. She was the first dog I have ever seen catch a squirrel, and play with it like a squeeky toy(she did not injure it either).
For years it was just me and my Sadie. I met my current wife and Sadie was a bit jealous. I was hugging my future wife goodbye one night, and Sadie jumped and nipped her in the side (we laughed, with a stern warning to her).
My wife and I married and she brought her Riley (a Jack Russell) into the relationship. Sadie was not too sure of him at first, a couple of nips and spats with Riley and the ground rules were set. She was the Alpha dog here!
When we had children, I wondered how Sadie would do. My sweet girl impressed me so much. She was so tolerable of the ear tugs, tail tugs, and other miscellaneous kid annoyances. Once again me Sadie wrapped herself tighter around my heart.
We were on vacation one year and Sadie developed a lump on her chin. We had it taken out, and found it to be a cancer. She was also developing arthritis, and my little speedster was slowing down; but she would not show it outside. This after all was still HER neighborhood.
In the beginning of 2010, we got a serious cold snap of weather. I noticed Sadie starting to hunch over. A couple of days later she was barely standing up. I took her to the vet, and we tried to get her healthy again. We brought her back for a follow up visit, and we were going to do accupuncture to try and help her back; which she injured somehow. Over that weekend my little baby took a turn for the worse. She began to pee on herself, and she did not like it one bit. That sweet dog tried to get up and get away from the mess, but she had sooo much trouble moving. I would get up to help her move and clean her and her bedding. She could not get comfortable, and would cry as she panted from the medicine. The next morning she wanted to sit outside for a bit. I went into get her ready for her appointment. I came back outside to check on her and saw her dragging her legs behind her.
I took my little baby to the vet and I had to make the most agonizing decision of my entire life. I cried with her for almost two hours.
I told her I would miss her, love her, and asked her to forgive me, hoping that I made the right decision for her. I asked her what am I going to do without her.
I still do not know what to do without her. I still swear I hear her, and wait for her to come around the corner to greet me. I miss her with all of my heart, and I am constantly thinking of her. She is my sweet little Sadie baby.
Her nick names, of course we have pet names for our pets, were SaySay, ChayChay (as the boys liked to call her). She was the best dog that I have ever had the pleasure of spending my life with. WE LOVE YOU SADIE, AND GOD DO WE MISS YOU..
