Heaven Waits

I 'waken now at dawns' gray light
In filmy mists I think I might
Pat your velvet head and see
Your shining eyes that look at me
With promise of undying love
This gift, I'm sure, came from above

Your precious face, it shines so sweet
From your eyes your old soul peeks
Muzzle gray now from the years
Of loving us and teaching cheer
Your endless Grace, undying faith
Lives eternal while stillness wakes

Reality now takes its hold
Your place, near me, in bed is cold...
Struggling hard to try and keep
This memory at the edge of sleep
It feels as if you are still here
As you have been these last 12 years

I wish that we could have the chance
For one more walk, that one "last dance"
To throw your ball another time
To see my heart in your eye-shine
For now though, you are really gone
But for this moment before dawn.

Mathilda Mae, now ever young
We'll meet again and we will run
Through fields and flowers in my dreams
In memories and in-between
This mortal place where I must be
And Heaven where you wait for me.
