Gone is the gentle nudge with cold nose,
Those big, beautiful, goofy ears I so adored,
The bark that told me friends or foes.
And the thick warm fur my fingers twirled.
My hand reaches down to grasp just empty air.
Over my shoulder I turn to peer,
Absent is the ecstatic leap
and then my sight begins to tear.
If only time would reverse its way,
If only she were still beside me now,
If only I had her with me today.
If only, if only is my wish at night.
The wish that cannot be granted,
And so I must bear the pain.
An ache that grips my heart steadfast,
loneliness is now to claim.
Rest in peace, my precious girl.
Rest assured you brought me such glee.
Our bond together will never end,
And someday reunited once more we shall be.
