The Leader of the Band
by Heidi .........................................
The first time I saw Diego his name was Diablo and he had more energy than any other ferret in the place. He was jumping and war dancing and running circles around Nannette's Cats. He was dragging toys under the bed and loved playing Hide Under the box game too! I actually almost didn't take him because his energy was a little intimidating. Combined with our sweet Patrick and fat but playful Gordo they made the perfect trio. In the 3 years since we have shared many joyous days and nights playing with our little friends. A great favorite was taking them to the beach, they just LOVED digging in the sand, dragging the football around, and suddenly scampering in 57 directions in order to make everyone scramble.

I'll never forget the day I was giving Diego a bath (NOT his favorite activity!) and he was writhing and squirming and desperately trying to get OUT of the towel afterwards... and he WARNED me.. but no, I held on... right up until he BOMBED me with explosive ferret poops... I was COVERED from neck to knees! I can laugh now... but I was NOT laughing then!

My favorite thing about Diego was how he loved to be with you though. He was independant and loved to explore but he so wanted a PEOPLES around and handy to check in with. And play ZOOM ZOOM... chase him down the hall-watch him jump backwards, and then he'd FLATTEN out like a beanbag speed bump! Then all of a sudden ZOOM off he'd go again! The day we had a canoe in the living room was a total highlite! The fun all three fuzzies had raceing from stem to stern and sliding down again... It really was too cute.

In the last year we've finally lost all three of our boys. Patrick was the oldest and the first to go, then Gordo who wasn't so much anymore. Diego irrascable spirit perservered but in shorter and shorter bursts. Just days ago he bounced all the way up the stairs to come see what the PEOPLZ were doing butHe overcame Adrenal tumors 2 years ago but started having seizures last week and yesterday we found him curled up sweetly and gone.

I've learned so much from my fuzzies, and Diego especially. I've learned that it's good to eat every three hours just as long as you run around and wear it off! I've learned that in the middle of running around like a maniac it's good to just STOP...RELAX... BREATHE... and then.....GO AGAIN! I've learned that while it's not always smart to climb under every cupboard it sure can be exciting. Mostly though I've learned that while I love Magic and Jack-Jack and Zek and Epatha(tink) and Fang (ok, I tolerate Fang, I admit it!)....that I adore cuddling with Mittens and Marley and Sweetie and Riley... All the love I have for them and the attention I lavish on them is because of three special boys who will never be replaced in our hearts! The Leader of the Band was tired and his eyes were getting old----Patrick, Gordo, and now Diego-you will be missed...

We will never be able to thank Nannette and Fox Valley Ferret enough for bringing this wonderful brand of fun and love into our lives... we truely have precious little footprints on our hearts!
