Poor,poor Diablo.
by Janet DeLaCruz.........................................
The moment we saw him, we couldn't take our eyes off him. White fur,one gold and one blue eye, he was perfect.
Our friend had too many cats and gave 2 of them to us. One was Banshee, the mother of the one this is dedicated to, and Diablo.
By the looks of it, Diablo was only a couple of months old. Banshee was positively years ahead. We took them home, and let Diablo outside. My
mom thought it was okay. He was an indoor and outdoor cat... so was Banshee. One day, on a horrifying January 3rd, 2009, a woman
came to the door. The door was open, but the screen door closed and locked. She said, "Hello? Is that white cat yours? Ok? Well he
just got hit. He ran under the fence." My jaw dropped. I ran out to the back yard with my mom. I was calling his name over and over.
Suddenly, we heard a miserable sounding screech/meow. It came from the shed. Apparently, one of his friends, a gray stray cat (no pun intended)
dug a hole in the back of the shed. I opened the shed with a creek. "Rrrowww...." I heard. My mom hurried in. I asked in a hurry to call my
dad. I called him and he tried to calm me. Later, my mom carried his beat up body out of the shed. He let out a screech.
She laid him in a box of towels. I carried the cat inside. I sat with him in the kitchen, sobbing. He looked at me with eyes shining like
stars, that said, "Help me, please." My mom called 3 veternarian clinics. 2 were closed and one was booked. My mom found out about a clinic in
the PetSmart' store. She drove there as fast as she could, me in the passenger seat, with the box in my lap. He let out another
painful meow. I was still sobbing as we entered the store. We got there and the vet took the box. We went in the room that smelled of
antiseptic cream. The vet pulled him out by the scruff of the neck. He had damaged lungs, was halfway into shock, and had a broken leg.
We left the room. When we came back, he told us that if we got him fixed up, it would cost $2,000-$3,000. We couldnt afford it. My
mom chose to put him down. We came in to find that his leg was bandaged up and he had an IV in the arm. He let out a less pained
meow. He tried to get up, and gave me a glance with glazed eyes. We all said our goodbyes and left the room.
We came back later and picked up the box with him in it. I looked in. He lay cold and motionless. Tears welled over my eyes.
Diablo, I will never forget you. Please say Hi to Pumpkin,Ginger, and Sher Khan for me. Goodbye... Banshee waits at the door for her only
child to come back.
