To Cody
by Jeff .........................................
Dear friends:
I wanted to send an email to let you know we had to put Codey down yesterday. His kidneys were failing and he was beginning to deteriorate. We had hoped to keep him for the weekend, but Saturday morning you could really see that he just did not feel well. But his tail never stopped wagging. Just a look in his directiom and off it went like a jackhammer.
I put him on my bed, which was his favorite place to be, and Joe, Chase and I spent a few hours laying down with him, holding him and telling him it will be O.K.
We took him to the vet where he was very well known for many years. Everyone came in to say their goodbyes.
Cody and I had this thing we did every morning when he woke up. He came to expect it and if I forgot, did he let me know with his little whine. I would crawl up beside him on the bed. We put our faces nose to nose and would stare into each others eyes. We both have rather large noses, mine probably being the larger of the two, but still our eyes were close and fixed. He would just stare at me until I would close my eyes, his paw always over my arm, and wait until I closed my eyes. Then he would do the same.
So, at the vets, Joe said his goodbyes and went out to stay with Chase. I laid down on the floor, nose to nose, our eyes fixed. I stroked him, telling him everything would be O.K. His eyes staying fixed on mine and never wandering. I could tell he knew it was time. Hew was very calm, tail still giving those occasional wags. Our eyes stayed fixed, only this time Cody closed his eyes first. He went very peacefully. For those of you who knew Cody well, he was an amazing member of the family, with an incredible personality. Always happy even in the end. He loved to swim, the car and walks, in that order. Swimming was his ultimate favorite thing to do. I hope he is in a place where he can swim to he heart's content. Oddly, our very close friend Oscar, sent us "A Pet's Ten Commandments". It was sent at 11: 30 A.M. Saturday morning, the time we left for the vet. We did not see the email until later that afternoon. We took the journey with Cody and we know it made it O.K. for him. His eyes told me so.
Forever missed by Jeff, Joe and Cody.
