I look at the person across me with amusement and realize they don't get it. They don't get the idea of real friendship. They may have friends, but they don't understand the deeper bond between soulmates. A friend is someone you go out to eat with or talk with on the phone or go shopping with, but a soulmate knows how you are feeling before you do. They come searching for you with that look on their face as if to say, "I know you're hurting. I'll make you feel better." Or "Don't cry. Things will get better."
Someone once told me that once you have children, your pets become secondary and you realize you never knew what real love is. I have two sons now and realize that my heart is big enough to hold all the love my two sons and my eleven cats can give me and I can give them right back. I would do everything for them within my power to do.
As I sit there looking at that person across from me and smile. To them it is just a cat or dog or bird or mouse, but to me they are my best friends and my soulmates.
