Angel
by Jenny Burnett.........................................
Today we went outside to put up Christmas lights. I heard the unmistakable sound of a cat. I turned in a circle but couldn't see him. Finally I noticed him in our neighbor's tree. He had climed almost to the top. I went over to see if I could get him to come down. He was so skinny and dirty and I wanted so much to get him down. We called the Kearney fire and rescure department thinking that surely they would come and get him down. The person on the phone said that "they dont risk firefighters for cats" He said that when the cat got hungry enough that he would come down. I knew that was true but I wanted to help this animal. I was finally able to get the cat to climb down. I thought that surely he could out run the dogs in my neighbor's yard. But the dogs killed the cat the minute that he jumped from the tree. I feel responsible for what happened to the cat. I am so so sorry. We named the cat Angel and buried him in the back yard. I know that all living things go on to a better place. I know that Angel will never again be cold or hungry. But I wish that I could have helped him. I wish that I could have protected him from those dogs. I am so so sorry my Angel. Rest in Peace.
