Billy the Goat
by Julie De Villiers.........................................
Billy, you came into our lives six months ago, when you were one week old. You didn't know how to eat or drink. We force-fed you so you wouldn't die. You became our best friend, as well as the dogs and cat and parrot's best friend. You ate everything in our garden, but we didn't care because we loved you. You came and cuddled in our bed with us, and always made sure you had the best spot, we didn't mind because we loved you. You ate up all our post, but we didn't care because we loved you. You still demanded your milk out of a syringe, and ate all the parrot's peanuts but we still loved you. You would come running to the gate when we got home from work, just like a faithful dog - you were simply the best!

You played in the garden for hours with Shane (5 years old), he adored you, and you were his special pet. He felt so important because he was the only child in school with a pet goat. We were going to take you to school next week so that the other children could also play with you.

The day you broke your horn off, we thought you were going to die from shock, but we managed to pull you through with bandages all over your head - you became our "one-horned" goat. Your lost horn was beginning to grow beautifully, and you almost had two perfect horns again.

Then two days ago you got sick Billy, we battled to find a doctor that could treat you, but eventually this morning we found a doctor that knew how to treat goats. He tried the whole day to save you, but this afternoon he said it would be kinder to put you to sleep because there was nothing he could do anymore.

Billy, we promise you we didn't want to do it, but we also didn't want you to be in pain anymore. We agreed because we love you.

Billy, you were very special to us, and we miss you so much already. We wish you were still here with us, but one day we will meet up with you again and have all the fun that we used to have. For now, sleep tight Billy, we will never forget you. We love you Billy!
