The Tale of Cassie B Bird
by Kathy .........................................
Cassie B started her life in the small town of Cambridge Springs Pa.in 1984
As a young bird she moved with her family out to Oregon.
They returned to Cambridge Springs PA. years later.
As her owner got older Cassie was moved to the basement in a
cage next to a another . Cassie like a lot of Cockatoo's started
to pull her feathers out from being bored.. ( Cassie was a
Citron Cockatoo)
At least the gentleman had enough sense to know Cassie needed
a new home and put a ad in the newspaper...
We obtained Cassie on 8/8/05.. She was bare from the neck to
the butt...
Cassie had her loves ( my husband ) and her hates ( me)
But we gave her the attention she needed.. She bonded with my
husband.
Shortly her feathers started to regrow..She was the joy of our
life. She started doing pet therapy and going out to the bank,
the car dealer etc etc...We were a happy family..along with our
other 7 birds. Cassie was so happy she started laying eggs for
the first time in her life
She was proud of her eggs... Suddenly in June of 2007 we noticed
Cassie was becoming distended. We called our Vet in Erie Pa .
He did not have much knowledge of birds, and refer us to a Aviary
Doctor in East Amherst NY.
We made a appt with Dr Adamzak and the night prior Cassie passed
what looked like hard cook egg of course we took it to the Doctor
She had never seen any thing like it, it appeared that Cassie had
made a egg without a shell. She got a septic infection ( a body
wide infection) and it was so bad it displaced all her organs...
We did not know if she would make it.. she was started on a
antibiotic for six weeks... She made a fully recovery.
She return to Pet Therapy outings and being Dad's little girl.
Among Cassie's favorite Junk food was French fries..
On August 1, 2008 after being given a Fry and her throwing it on
the cage floor we knew something was up. As the day went on we
notice Cassie was Throwing up water... and anyone who knows bird
know they do not throw up. A emergency call was made to East
Amherst and she went up the same afternoon it was a long and
stressful trip- but again Cassie was egg bound. The Doctor gave
a shot of in attempt to harden the shell- but 2 days later we
had to have the egg and her reproductive tract removed... She
came on 8/8/2008 her birthday of her arrival
She looked funny shaved from bottom to beak, but she was alive
and had one big birthday party eventho she was likely not really
in the mood to have it.. She regrew all of the feathers plus
some... She return to Pet therapy ,outings , and hating me and
loving her Daddy.
In June of 2009 we took Cassie B up to East Amherst Ny for her
yearly check up... The Doctor noted that Cassie had a Heart
Murmur while she was doing the pre op testing and did do a
Echocardiogram to be safe... It was nothing unusal....
Cassie continued on with her live hating me and loving her
dad etc..
Till January 13 2010.. My husband and I enjoy going to a
local tavern a couple times a week. That night was we were
leaving my Husband told Cassie to be a good girl while we
were gone... She shook her head yes... About 20 minutes later
My brother who lives with us called the taven told us Cassie
had fallen of the perch and nothing acting right... We got home
she was dead on the cage floor... With her cardiac history it
was likely Cardiac Arrest.
The one thing that Cassie loved to do was to get up in my
Husband's sweat shirt... She would spend hours up there and
even did a egg...This was true love of my husband..
We have adopted a Unbrella Cockatoo out of Rochester NY
Rescue. Milton is 14 years old...
He loves everyone- He is not Cassie's Replacement...
But it is weird in the last few days Milton has started
crawling up in my Husband's Sweat Shirt... He did not
encourage this...
But did Cassie send a message to Milton that she is okay,
and about the hiding place... who knows.
Rest in peace Cassie ,and yes we will give Milton the
same care and love as you
Someday we will all met..
