Sparky's Purpose

Sparky's Purpose

Many animals were lined up in heaven that day, to ask God a question. Many asked him when they would see their masters again, or their friends. Some asked what their loved ones were doing then, and if they missed them. But there was one dog that asked the most surprising question of all...

"God," said Sparky, a little Border terrier. "I lived behind a trailer for most of my puppy hood. When the humans found me, I was very sick. I could hardly move because people had been so mean to me. They took me to a shelter, and I got better. But nobody wanted me. I watched thousands of dogs be adopted, and nobody even glanced my way. I became very sad, and the shelter staff saw this. One day they took me into a back room and put me to sleep, because they thought that it was the nicest thing to do for me. I never made a child happy, or got to make someone laugh, or make friends with another dog. I was wondering, why did you put me on Earth if I never made a difference?"
God sat there for a while, thinking about his answer. He knew Sparky had a good question, and he wanted to answer it as best as he could.
"Sparky," he said, looking the puppy straight in the eye, " How did you feel when you were abandoned behind the trailer?"
"Well, I felt lonely. I had no one to talk to or be friends with."
"And how did you feel at the shelter?"
"I felt unloved. Nobody wanted me because of my hard life. Everyone was always looking at another dog, not me."
"Good Sparky. Now, look down on Earth. What do you see?"
"Well, I see some happiness, but most people are sad. They have no food just like me. Some children have never known love. They look just like I did; sad and depressed."
"Many of those people that you just saw will come here very soon. They have never known love, and here is the best place to find it. Sparky, I brought you to Earth so you could do a very important job for me."
Sparky's ears perked up. "What is it?" he asked excitedly.
"I want you to gather up all that hurt that others gave to you, and turn it into love. When those people get here, they will need someone to hold and to love. I chose you Sparky, because I knew you could do it. You have lots of experience that not many dogs have. Look, there's someone who needs love now."
Sparky looked at where God was pointing. He saw a little girl crying on a bench. Without another word to God, he turned around and raced over to her. He jumped on her lap and started to lick he tears away. Soon, she was laughing and smiling, and her eyes shined with a new hope.
God leaned over to Jesus. "Looks like he understands his purpose in life." He said with a smile. Jesus chuckled, as they both watched the new friends run and chase each other, both happy in each other's presence.
