We met Hula at a shelter while we were actually looking at another dog, this 2 year old, 3 legged mixed breed creature looked in our eyes and it was all over. She adopted us and lucky for us she did, for 12 years she allowed us to sleep in her bed, live in her house, feed her and take care of her every need. Along the way she repaid us with unconditional love and pure joy. We have had several dogs over the years and all of them were loved deeply. However it's the special needs dog that seems to tug at your heart strings a little more. Hula 35 pounds used to terrorize our beautiful 85 pound Lab Gage. Gage would hide behind me to get away from her. He too was a great dog that seemed to know Hula's handicap and would let her win. Our aloof Cocker at the time Mango wanted nothing to do with the action.
Hula passed away this weekend, 6 months ago she started having seizures. Each one took something away from her. This past weekend she had three and was no longer able to stand up. She also showed no interest in food. This is a dog that even with 3 legs beat the others to the feed line. She never met a meal she didn't like. I have had 5 dogs in my adult life, Dusi, Lotus, Hula, Mango and Gage. Each of them was loved and adored. Each of them made me a better person, they were all special but Dusi and Hula had special needs that made them more endearing. I am in pain, I cry each time I think about any of our dog's. The pain is fresh with the passing of Hula 31 hours ago. I am rambling. I feel for everyone that has lost a pet in their life. Hula, Dusi, Lotus, Gage and Mango we will never forget you. I pray that all your pain and afflictions are gone, and Hula maybe you now have 4 good legs although you did so well with three. God Bless you all.
