It feels so long ago that while walking around the kennels out of all the dogs looking for a home Codi picked me, with toy in mouth she looked up and said I'm going home with you. And she was right. Out of the four we choose to look at more closely her file was the largest, habits of running away, bin raiding, frightening livestock, you name it this one had it in her report, an so what? Dog chose owner. Two weeks was a long time to wait for her to come to her new home, finally she was here.
The black and pink tongue showed and the games began. Frequent raiding of the fridge that turned into a battle of wits all could be dealt with, food could be replaced but this dog was one in a million. Loving and sometimes misunderstood her character won over even despite her naughty side. Doing DIY she would steal the wood you had just cut, move tools just to play you up or simply lie in the most awkward of places. She was however ever dependable and a best friend who never turned her back, so when her little problem worsened with age how could I turn my back on her, I couldn't and wouldn't. Codi was a part of the family and forever will be.
It soon came time for dogs to no longer be a sub for a child and along came ours, even during pregnancy Codi knew something was up and somehow became softer, more caring, lying where she needed to be to ensure she was there if we wanted her. Our son came along and Codi was amazing, proud to walk alongside his pram and lay as close to him as we would allow just to be near the newest member of her pack.
The 5th of September 2009 will be a day of great sadness, near on 15 years old the Rottie cross was tired. After being re-homed five times and then finally to us for the last 6 years of her life in her retirement years she lived. There was a twinkle, a smile even, a sharp wag of the tail and a strut in her walk.
Codi was a special dog, a loved dog...more than that she was a friend and a member of the family who will always be missed.
