You Are Still With Me
by Ruth Jamison.........................................
It has been eight years since I lost my first shih tzu. He was totally devoted to me. Even though my family and I made the decision to get another shih tzu, I still had an emptiness inside.Four years ago I was sitting alone in my bedroom waiting for my family to get home when I heard a thumping under my bed.(Mathis Lee always slept there.) I knew our other dog was being boarded me and at first I was startled. Suddenly it occurred to me that our first shih tzu had returned to wish me a happy birthday.
I became increasingly aware of his presence especially around holidays. This past Christmas eve I was seated in the living room with my husband and granddaughter. Suddenly our motion activated Santa began to sing. My granddaughter looked puzzled. I looked at my husband and he gave me that knowing look. We knew that Mathis Lee had arrived for the holidays. Our other dog slept through the whole event as if he has become accustomed to Mathis Lee's presence.
He stayed for about an hour and left shortly after our current dog had gotten into trouble.
I know that he is there watching over our current dog. He is a guardian angel for the new guy. I have told people who have lost pets to keep their eyes and ears open. They do remain with their owners. They make their presence known in subtle ways. I always cherish those moments with Mathis Lee.
