MISTY
by S schultz.........................................
Misty was only 6 weeks old the day we got her. She was a mixed small breed dog. I was in about the 4th grade. My sister Sandy and I had begged Mom for a puppy. Mom was a push over when it came to dogs. So it did not take long to convince Mom to get us one. It was in the dead of winter. So when we left for school and Mom and Dad left for work, Mom put Misty in the front hall with a space heater to keep her warm. All went well for about one week. Then oneday Sandy and I got off the bus and made a mad dash to the house so we could play with Misty. Sandy being older than me had a key to the house. When she opened the door there lay Misty with the space heater cord in her mouth. She was being electrocuted. I ran to pick her up but Sandy grabed me and told me to unplug the cord first. I did and Sandy ran to call Mom at work. While we waited on Mom Sandy picked Misty up but there was no sign of life. Our Grandmother who lived just next door came over to see what was wrong. She said she had checked on Misty just about a half hour before we got home and she was fine. Mom made it home in record time. She grabed Misty and ran to the car with her. Grandma, Sandy, and me climbed into the car. We also made it to the vets in record time. Still there was no sign of life in Misty. Mom ran into the vets office with Misty wrapped in a towel. The office was full of people and pets. But everyone stood back when Mom came running in. The vet came running out grabbed Misty and took off to the back. Mom hot on his heels. Grandma made Sandy and me wait with her. It seemed like hours before Mom came out. The vet had told Mom that Misty had only a slime chance to live and if she did live she would have severe brain damage. But Someone forgot to tell Misty that. Not only did she live but she suffered no brain damage. That is not to say she came out of it fine, she did'nt. She lost the whole right side of her face. There was no jaw bone which meant there were no teeth. Her tounge was so damaged that it was just one little ball. Her right eye was somehow not damaged. Misty spent over a year in and out of the vets. On thanksgiving day Misty came home to stay. She enjoyed her dressing. She made a mess with it but that did not matter to us she was alive. Misty became the poster dog for "Do not let this happen to your puppy". She also became famous. Misty was welcomed into every store we went in. People we did not know came up to us to say they had seen her at the vets.
Misty lived for over 13 years but she never complained. She was no beauty to look at. My boyfriend Joe at the time told her she was ugly. She never forgot it either. When ever he came over she would sit next to him and pass wind. Once we were moveing and Joe was helping us Misty got in the back seat of his car. Joe had no idea she was in there until he got this fowl smell. By the time he got to our new house he had all the windows down with his head out the window. Misty waited for him to open her door then got out and looked at him as if to say "now we are even."
That was years ago. Misty went to rainbow bridge where she is now not olny beautiful on the iside but beautiful on the ouside. Joe to has crossed over the bridge. I can not help but wonder if they found each other. I hope so. Maybe just maybe Misty and Joe crossed on over into heaven to gether. Where looks and smells do'nt matter.
Misty taught me to never judge someone by there looks. Joe left me with 2 beautiful children. Elizabeth Suzanne, and Joseph Jr. I wish Joe had been here to see his grandson Jordan come into this world. Maybe he was. Maybe Joe and one ugly stinky beautiful little dog was here. May they rest in peace
