Savannah
by Sheila .........................................
A promise made to a little girl.
A comfort after the loss of a mother.
A friend to greet me at the door after a long day.
Liquid brown eyes, a gray muzzle and a tail that spins like a heliocopter's blade.
Memories of you running in the snow, running from me. I would get almost close enough to touch you and you would turn, look at me with a glint in your eye and off you would go again.
Lying contentendly on my bed, slightly snoring while I read. Once my light was out, off you hopped to slumber for the night on your favorite piece of furniture.
Always gentle. Accepting offered tidbits from my hand. Always a lady crossing your paws as you sat and watched those you loved from a distance.
So afraid of thunder and loud noises. It saddened me so that I could not ease your fear and make you feel safe.
On our first meeting, you behind bars, shivering, holding a thin ragged blue blanket between your teeth, hoping someone would choose you. You chose me sweet dog. A dog! No, you were so much more. For all these years you have been a friend, a confidante, a comfort and a joy. You completed our family and you will be cherished always dear friend.
