Right now you’re napping,
Saving up your energy for the lake
The last trip to the lake
On this, your last day.
I don’t know how to say goodbye to you.
I’ve thought about nothing else for 3 days.
I don’t remember the world before,
And I don’t want to know it without you.
The ambient noise of you breathing that lulls me to sleep at night.
The quiet warmth of your presence following me around the house.
The soft thump of your tail on the floor when I get home.
The feel of your fur under my fingertips.
I never want to forget.
You’ve lived a long and full life,
With lots of love and adventures.
And now you set out to your greatest adventure yet:
Crossing that rainbow bridge in the sky.
I hope and pray heaven is real.
I hope and pray you meet me there.
This can’t be the end.
I don’t know how to say goodbye
To my sweet precious boy.
8 years was not enough time.
A lifetime would hardly be enough.
To understand what you mean to me.
To find the words to say it out loud.
So you keep napping,
And I’ll keep watch
Till we go to the lake
For one last time.
