As I was sitting here at my coumpter today surrounded by my 4 dogs it dawned on me that God thought a long time before he created a dog. This animal that at times is smarter than we are. Who else could get you out of bed on a cold day just by running up and down the bed. I myself have sat down to eat and ended up giveing most of it to the dog just because she looked sad. That sad look will work every time. I have had more dogs in my 47 years of life than I can remember. And each one was a loan
Peppie though was a dog from my childhood who showed me that animals do grieve. Peppie had several puppies. One by one they died. As each puppy died Peppie whined. She then gently pushed it to the side and loved on the live puppies. Finally there was just one puppy left. I was standing in the kitchen when the mournful howl began. It seemed to be comeing from the depths of her very soul. I ran to the shed and there in the back of the shed stood Peppie. The howl seemed to go on forever. It took days for her to eat. I told her she would see her babies again someday. God loaned me Peppie to show me that it is ok to grieve.
Misty was our little mix breed who chewed a heater cord into and bruned half her face off. She lived for 13 years without ever knowing or careing that she was no beauty. God loaned me Misty to show me beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
CoCo came into my life in 1991. He was a little grey poodle I got at the pound. He brought me so much love and gave me a run for my money. Every time the door was open CoCO yelled "feet don't fail me now". His favorite thing was to watch me get dressed for church and then wait by the door so he coud run out when my son opened the door. He must have thought I looked funny in my sunday best running at full speed while threathing to kill him. He also loved to play tug of war with my moms chow and cocker mix. Someone though forgot to tell him that they should use a rope instead of him. He had to be put back together more than once. I think he did it because he always got hot dogs and angel fool cake when he as hurt. AS the years passed he began to show his age. First he went deaf then blind. But even blind he still loved to run. My other dog Kayla began his eyes and ears. At the age of 17 he no longer responed to our touch. With a heavy heart I set him free. Kayla and I missed him something awful. God gave Me CoCo to help me learn to love and let go.
Yes our four legged animals are a loan from God. When he calls one home he sends another to take its place. So welcome a dog into your life. After all dog spelled backward is God. When you say yes to a dog you say yes God.
