Half Face Misty
by Suzanne Schultz.........................................
I have wrote about Misty before on here but I know that there are new people on here that have not read her story. If Misty's story can save just one puppy from her fate then it is worth it.
In the 1970's my sister Sandi and I decided we wanted a new puppy. Knowing Mom was a real push over it only took us about 15 minutes to get mom to say yes. There was a women in our home town that had all kind of animals to sell. It was not the most clean place around but she was good to her animals. They were well cared for. She had a small puppy for sale. So Mom took us to see the puppy. There in this huge box was a tiny brown puppy. Of cource we wanted her. Mom was not sure. The puppy cost $20.00. Now you must understand in the 70's $20.00 was alot of money for a dog. The deal was closed when another family came in to get the puppy. So home we went with Misty. It was winter and with us in school and Mom and Dad at work Misty had to be left in the front hall. Our Grandma would check on Misty during the day. Then it happened. Sandi and I got off the school bus oneday in a dead run to get inside to play with Misty. Me being younger had to be the first one inside. The scene in the hall is with me still. Misty was laying on the floor. I ran to grab her up to play with her but Sandi pushed me out of the way. Sandi was screaming at the top of her lungs. "NO OH GOD NO". It was then I saw the heater cord in Misty's mouth. She had chewed into a live cord. Her whole little body was being electracuted. Sandi unpluged the cord but there was no sign of life in Misty. Grandma had heard Sandi screaming from her house next door and come to see what was wrong. Sandi was on the phone with Mom so I got a towel and covered Misty up. Mom rushed home and of to the vet we went. At the vets office Mom took Misty and ran like a mad women into the office. The vet took one look at Misty grabed her and ran to the back with her. Mom followed. Sandi and me waited in the waiting room. The vet gave Misty a 10 percent chance to live and if she did live there would be sever brain injury. Someone forgot to tell Misty this though. By the next morning she was up eating. Sure her head was three times larger than her body, but she was alive, with no brain injury. Misty however did lose most of her face on the left side. All of her teeth on that side were gone forever. Her toung was so badly deformed I was amazed she could eat. But there was no food Misty did not like. Sure she made a mess every time she ate but that was ok. At the time of her injury Misty was 9 weeks old. She stayed at the vets for the first year more than at home. That $20.00 puppy became the $1.000 dog. Misty won hearts where ever she went. There was no store that she was not welcome in. She became the poster dog for "Do Not Let This Happen To Your Puppy." She was our half face angel for 13 wonderful years. I know in Heaven she has a brand new face but I would love for her to stay just the way she was. Our half face angel. She will forever be missed and loved.

So please if you get a new puppy make sure there are no cords they can chew. They can and will chew on everythig. Misty was lucky and had a wonderful life. But it could also have killed her. Our family learned a hard lesson, but it was Misty who paid the price.
