MOMMA'S GIRL
by TAMI AUER.........................................
"FREE PUPPY," THAT'S WHAT THE LITTLE BOY SAID, I ROLLED MY CAR WINDOW DOWN AND ASKED IS IT A MALE OR FEMALE? HE REPLIED "I'M NOT SURE,I WAS TOLD TO GIVE IT AWAY." AND THAT MY FRIENDS WAS THE DAY ASHLEY, MY 4 YR. OLD AND I, FELL IN LOVE WITH SAMANTHA LYNN. SHE WAS SO LITTLE, SO FURRY, SO CUTE AND SO CONFUSED. HER BREATH SO STRONG OF MOTHERS MILK, SHE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN BUT 4-5 WEEKS OLD. HER CRIES SO WEAK, HER LEGS NOT ABLE TO HOLD HER UP, BUT SHE MANAGED TO FOLLOW ASHLEY UP AND DOWN THE DRIVEWAY ALL THAT DAY. AS A NEWLY DIVORCED WOMAN, I WASN'T READY FOR A NEW PUPPY, I REGRETTED MY DECISION AND WENT DOOR TO DOOR TRYING TO GIVE HER AWAY. AFTER REALIZING SAMANTHA WAS STAYING THE NIGHT, WE WENT TO WALMART FOR PUPPY FOOD,TOYS AND A CRATE. SAMANTHA CRIED ALL NIGHT AND CRIED FOR THE NEXT 7 NIGHTS. SAM GREW AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND WAS POTTY TRAINED AFTER TWO WEEKS. SHE HATED THE CRATE, BUT SOON LEARNED TO RESPECT HER TIME ALONE AND HER SENSE OF SAFETY. SAM SOMEHOW TOOK ON THE JOB OF FOLLOWING ASHLEY (WHEREVER SHE WENT) I WOULD LOOK DOWN OR UP THE STREET AND WHATEVER PORCH SAM WAS SITTING ON, I KNEW WHERE ASH WAS. SAM GREW TO AN ADULT WEIGHT OF 21 POUNDS, BUT SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS ABOUT 300. SAMANTHA TOOK OVER PROTECTING ASHLEY, MOMMA AND THE HOUSE AT ANY COST. SHE WOULD ONLY EAT LATE AT NIGHT AFTER WE WERE ALL SAFE AND IN BED, SHE SLEPT WITH MOMMA, RIGHT NEXT TO HER WITH HER EARS STRAIGHT UP, HOPING TO ALARM US IF ANY PROBLEMS AROSE. SAMANTHA LYNN CONTINUED HER JOB AND NEVER ONCE LET US DOWN FOR 17 YEARS. SHE COULDN'T JUMP ON THE BED NEAR THE END SO SHE WOULD LAY RIGHT NEXT TO IT, ONLY TO BE STEPPED ON A COUPLE TIMES. AS SAM GOT OLDER WITH DECREASED HEARING AND VISION WE PRAYED GOD WOULD TAKE HER ONE DAY PEACEFULLY IN HER BED, THAT NEVER HAPPENED. MOMMA MADE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEND SAMANTHA TO PUPPY HEAVEN, ASHLEY DROVE IN FROM COLLEGE THAT DAY TO WITNESS SAM'S GOING TO PUPPY HEAVEN EVENT. MOMMA AND ASH CRIED FOR OUR OWN SELFISH REASONS, SAMANTHA WAS IN THE CAR, "SHE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN" WE ROLLED THE WINDOWS DOWN AND SAM STUCK HER HEAD OUT AND LET THE WIND HIT HER FACE. SAMANTHA KNEW SHE WAS GOING HOME, BUT SHE WAS ALSO NERVOUS TO LEAVE US. SAM WASN'T SURE ASHLEY AND MOMMA WOULD BE OK. AS WE DROVE TO THE VET, WITH SAM'S HEAD HANGING OUT THE WINDOW, THE WIND IN HER FACE, ASHLEY TOLD HER WE WERE GOING TO BE OK, AND SHE WAS SOON GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER JOB OF TAKING CARE OF ALL THE PUPPIES AND OTHER DOGS WHO DESERVED UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. MOMMA AND ASHLEY WERN'T SURE THIS WAS THE BEST THING, BUT THEY KNEW IT WAS THE RIGHT THING. LIFE IS KINDA FUNNY, BECAUSE WE NEVER CRIED WHEN THEY PUT THE MEDICINE IN SAM, WE CRIED BEFORE SHE WAS GONE, BUT WE NEVER CRIED WATCHING HER LAST BREATH. SAMANTHA LYNN HAD NO HEART SOUNDS 15 SECONDS AFTER THE INJECTION, SHE WENT SO PEACEFULLY AND SO WILLING. AFTER 17 YEARS OF LOYALTY AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE I KNOW I DID THE RIGHT THING. TRUST ME "I AM THE MOMMA."
"GOOD BYE TO YOU MY TRUSTED FRIEND" ASHLEY AND MOMMA WILL ALWAYS LOVE YA. (SAMANTHA LYNN,MOMMA'S GIRL)
