THE LAST CAR RIDE
I would say to her "car ride!"
She jumped up, face looking up at me
Worked like a charm every time
Only this time was the last
I couldn't't bring myself to it
But I did
Who can say they found a human as lovable?
Unconditional is a word I think of often
And I can't find a suitable match
It took a canine to show it
The capacity to abandon all other woes
Just to show affection
The hurt began the morning she didn't eat
And the one after that where she fell on the ground
I feel I tricked her telling her to go for the ride
But it was me who was fooled
Her instinct -- she knew
She held on for me, for the family
So she hopped in the back seat
One more ride to sniff the strange winds
Expecting the end
