My Cupid
by Valerie Lecesse.........................................
I started seeing the newspaper around the house. Then my husband told me he was going to go look at a dune buggy. I went along with him that night, but stayed in the car. My husband came out of the house and walked toward the car. As he walked toward me, out popped this little white head. It was almost as if she was so eager to see me that she couldn't wait. She was my Cupid and my husband bought her as an anniversary present for me! A little white Maltese puppy that I instantly fell in love with. She was my constant companion and usually had to be touching me in one way or another.

At night I would play Nintendo in the recliner and Cupid would tuck herself in behind my neck. As she got bigger though, that didn't work anymore. So, I would sit curled in my chair or on the couch and she would wait until I got myself settled, then she would back herself into my rear, with both of our butts touching.

Cupid absolutely loved a ball we had gotten on her first night home and played with it until it had to be thrown away. She was very particular and didn't like any others we brought home. Luckily we were able to locate another very similar that she liked almost as much as the first ball, so we bought a few as backup.

She loved to play in the water and had a wading pool. Then there was the time I came into the living room to find her in her crate completely covered in mud!

She would have a way of looking at me with complete and total love and devotion. It just emanated off of her.

One day my son was just playing around with me and went to slap at my leg. She jumped at his hand and barked at him. She definitely didn't like that!

Cupid developed a heart condition and was on medication for 3-4 years. One night her breathing got quite bad and we took her to an emergency vet. It was not good news and they wanted to admit her but didn't think she would make it through the night. I was absolutely not going to let my beloved dog pass away without me being there. We took her home and thankfully she made it through the night.

The next day however, her breathing became much more labored. My husband and I took her to the vet that had treated her for some years. The vet said she was suffering. We didn't want that for her and made the choice to help her cross over the Rainbow Bridge. She was 13 years old and was much too young. I wasn't ready for her to not be with me.

It's been almost 3 years now since her passing. We have since gotten 2 other Maltese dogs, Angel & Bella. Both are loved more than I can tell you, however Cupid will always have a special place in my heart.

I miss her everyday. My butt is lonely without her. Due to 13 years of arranging myself to accommodate her, I still can't really sit on the couch without arranging myself sideways out of habit.

Cupid, please know that you are missed and are loved very much. I know that you are happy and free of pain. You are playing with your ball again! We'll get to see each other again some day.

I always told her she was "The most beautiful Maltese in the world". And she was.
