Saying goodbye to a friend
by christy .........................................
Being a veterinary professional doesn't make losing a pet any easier. Especially, when it's my dad and his beloved Remington. Remington, a massive Irish Setter, who for the past 10 years has cared for my single father. I live 1000 miles away and felt relief knowing that Remy was there keeping my dad safe. Remington was more like a cat, see he had 9 lives. He was hit by a car when he was just a puppy. A few years ago, someone pulling a trailer ran over him again. He has battled food allergies, hip displasia, skin infections. But it was oral cancer that has depleted his strength. After battling with the decision to say goodbye, my father chose the most loving and caring thing for Remy. Remington would be entering rainbow bridge at noon. My father made the appointment yesterday. I spoke with my father this morning and I will just say his voice declared nothing but sadness. He expressed how hard this is going to be for him. I talked him through the steps and I called the vet myself and asked them to please take care of both my father and Remy. I Received a text message a few minutes ago from my aunt, Remy has now passed and my father is trying to figure out how he will live his life without his best friend. I wish I could have been there to say goodbye and to thank him for being such a great fur brother. I have 3 dogs and a cat of my own. My oldest is 14 and she has begun to slow down. I glanced at her a few times while typing this, tears streaming down my face, thinking how blessed I've been to have been owned by such a wonderful girl. Sad, because I know my time with her is also short. Remington, run my friend, with your new healthy hips, eat with your healthy jaw and know that one day you will again chase those deer with dad!
