Lester
by cindy orr.........................................
Where are you,Lester? The last time I seen you,you were asleep on the kitchen table, one of Parkers' legs was draped over your shoulder.I took a picture of you two sleeping. How was I to know that was the last time I would see your beautiful face? For the last 18 months, our ritual was the same, in before dark, sleeping on the table until bedtime, then in the box I set on the dresser for you to sleep in. How you loved boxes! You are my beautiful, grey giant, the tallest cat I have ever seen. But so gentle,so quiet;you would gently tap my arm to get my attention when I was reading the morning paper, then you would jump in my lap and push your head under my chin. I told you that you were the best kitty ever, the kindest, most gentle soul around. You would only stay a few minutes, then out the back door till it was getting dark, then time to come in for the nite. Where are you? I have called your name a hundred times in the last 2 days. I have looked everywhere I could think of. I hate this. I just don't know what has happened to you. I guess its my fault for letting you all go outside but living in the country, I feel it would be safe for you to be out in the daytime but in the house at nite. I just don't know where you are. If you have passed over, I hope your journey was a swift one;if you are still out there;be careful,my beauty, come home when you tire of wandering, I miss you so much. Wait, let me make one more trip outside, in the dark, to call our your name. Hoping to see your lanky grey shadow, loping across the yard, running up the steps and back into your box by the bed.
