For Max
by joalaska .........................................
Max was not my cat.
He arrived in a cat carrier, full grown and patient.
Brought by a temporary visitor who abandoned him,
Knowing I would take care of him.
He became, MY cat.
I could imagine him as a kitten, fluffy and curious,
playing with every stray thread or ball of paper,
But he was an adult, rather aloof and quiet.
He loved laying on my bed pillows where the sun
Warmed him, and would seek out any suitcase,
As if he was ready to travel on.
He became my buddy, sitting next to me
By the computer, puzzled by the strange sound
And flickering lights. Sitting stately as a
Statue, waiting for me to stop and give him a pet.

He left my life as he entered it. In his cat carrier
Going home from the vet.
He gave a few loud mews and shut his eyes for
The last time.
I miss him still, his quiet patience with life, his
Grateful thanks for food and love.
His golden eyes that watched me, waiting for a
Word, a touch, a pet, always filled with love.
We made a place for him to sleep forever, and I
Found a little statue of a sleeping kitty with angel wings
To go over his bed.
Sweet, patient, loving Max. I hope you are waiting for me
By the Rainbow bridge, patiently waiting for
The hugs and pets I want to give you.
