Sheba
by suzanne schultz.........................................
Sheba was my mothers dog. For about 14 years Sheda never let mom get to far away. The day she got Sheba I still remember. Mom wanted a small dog to keep in the house so I took Mom to the pound to look and see what they had. There sitting in a cage on the floor was this black ball of fur. I never was really sure what kind of dog she was but Mom fell in love. So Sheba came home with Mom. We were to learn a few things about her in the weeks and months to follow. She loved a stuffed animal. At night she would go around the house and find all her toys and line them up. My sister said she was counting them. She loved to have people visit. Infact not one visitor ever came by that did not get a gift. Sheba met each person with her own special gift. I am sure there was more than one visitor who came by that did not care for Shebas gift. You see she met them with what ever she could find. More than once she had one of my childrens dirty socks as a gift. She even met my sister at the door with a Guide Post. She hated to have her fur trimed. Just act like you were going to cut it and she went wild. Then my daughter got a hamster and Sheba was in love. Sheba sat and looked at that hamster 24/7. I got a brain storm one day, I put the hamster cage on the table and sat Sheba in a chair. She never knew I cut her fur. Then the day came when my daughters cat had kittens. I made the mistake of letting Sheba see them. Just one look and she was hooked.
Sheba was always close to Mom. She slept in the room with her. Sheba would make sure Mom was still around before she went to play. As the years passed both Mom and Sheba began to slow down. A couple of years ago Sheba started to go blind. Moms health went down as well. Mom had to be put on oxygen full time. Sheba was never more happy than to be laying on the oxygen tube. More than once Mom had to make Sheba get off so she could walk around.
I had moved away 2 years ago. I got the call you never want to get. Mom called me on October the 5. Sheba had a stroke. The vet said he would do all he could. Far five days Sheba fought to go back home to Mom. On the fifth day Sheba had another stroke and the vet said it was time to say goodbye. Mom had set Sheba free twice. Once from the cage at the pound, then from a body that no longer worked.
Sheba now runs free in all her grace. Her memory will live forever in our hearts. We love you Sheba Girl.
