local paper ran story: Texas brought smiles to many people.
Pets, particularly dogs, continue to take on an ever increasing role in our society. I have ntoiced some obituaries the family dog or cat has been named as a surviro or special friend.
But I guess it was a first when gordonsville resident Terry Littlepage brought in an obituary of her dog Txas who passed away last week.
Besides a cherised companion for Littlepage, Texas was a celebrity of sorts, since he was a therapy dog.
So I find it only fitting to recognize him for his community service.
There is always a need for community service acts to fill voids in today's society.
I recall seeing Texas work his talents at at local nursing home.
The energetic little ball of fluffy hairs brought smiles to the faces of many of its residents during visits. Even a chuckle or two for some as they watched greet them in his Halloween costume.
some patients couldn't resist rubbing Texas forehead which brought him special pleasure, too. Texas was also rewarded by many of the patients with candy.
with his adult handler (Littlepage), Texas visted the sick in Wilson, Putnam and macon counties, also.
As an art therapist, Littlepage took Texas with her to therapy sessions in Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana, as she moved from place to place.
"Although he has his rightful place in doggie heaven, he won't be forgotten," Littlepage says. He had a way with everyone he came in contact. He was about the equivlent to Lassie (an old TV series) He wore an angel outfit with a halo when visited nursing homes on Halloween. Yes, he was an angel and truly God blessed Texas. I felt blessed to have had such a wonderful canine."
Texas was 11 (actually 14) when he passed away last week.
According to reports animals do light up most people's life, particularly the elderly. There was a time when dogs were mainly pets for children or used for hunting.
But in recent years, mans best friend, has gained a significant role in social circles. Some women find it fashionable for a poch to be sticking heads out of pocketbooks....
Equally as fashonable is the larger dog which proudly bobbles along on a leash. Is the owner walking the dog or the dog walking the owner?
For some women, they had rather have a dog around the house for company than a man.
I guess they're less demanding than a man, but they still have to fed, watered and taken for a walk if confined.
Some women had rather have a dog around to tell their troubles to, rather than a woman. A dog always lsitens and doesn't bark unless trained to do so.
Dog's always long for the attention of their owners, whether they're around or not. When they're gone a valued pet, like Texas, is always missed by its owner and those who knew him personally.
end
Texas was truly a one of a kind. A friend said to me, I've never seen a human so devoted to an animal as you were. If you'd like to see him on my website you can e-mail and I'll send address.
